Document verification

Official documents as proof of identity

Be 100% sure of a person’s identity by complementing official documents with biometric verification.

What is document verification?

In document verification, official documents such as ID-cards, driver’s licenses, passports… are used to verify the identity of a user. This applies, for instance, in countries where no government supported Identity Providers (IdPs) such as itsme or eHerkenning are available, or when onboarding foreign nationals that have no access to these IdPs.

Document verification uses a combination of these documents and biometrics. Upon onboarding, a person is asked to photograph the official document and record a video selfie. Our document verification system will check if the documents are not forged and compare the selfie to the picture on the documents. TrustBuilder covers legal documents from almost 200 countries globally.

Why use document verification by TrustBuilder

TrustBuilder adds substantial value to document verification.

Support for the entire customer journey

When used during onboarding, document verification by TrustBuilder will not only verify the identity of a user, it can also store the verification information for later use. The user information will then be used to apply, for instance, biometric authentication, thus enhancing customer experience.

Policy-driven access control

TrustBuilder extends document verification by checking external sources for extra information, for instance if people are on a sanctions list, a list with politically exposed persons… This information is used to fuel strict policies that grant or deny access to applications and resources.

Customizable integration

TrustBuilder’s document verification can be white-labeled and integrated into a mobile app, or even a website. This streamlines the onboarding process for the end-user. Organizations can also customize the document verification engine to limit onboarding to specific countries or to specific documents, for instance driver’s licenses.

Use document verification for authentication purposes

Once a user has onboarded using document verification, TrustBuilder customers can also use the selfie that was recorded for authentication purposes, for instance in physical access control or to allow the installation of an extra app.

Compliance and audits

TrustBuilder allows its customers to store the documents and selfie in the Universal Database, so all privacy regulations can be enforced. Storing the information also serves as proof that document verification was used, for audits and legal purposes.

Use cases for document verification

Document verification can be used in multiple use cases, for both online and physical security.

Onboarding

The most common use case for document verification is when a person wants to onboard. By using document verification, the identity management system can verify a person is who they claim to be. Document verification can be used as a complement to other mobile identification solutions.

Proof of identity at purchases

For most purchases, all you need to do is pay to receive your order. For some purchases, however, the identity needs to be verified, for instance when purchasing a SIM card for a mobile phone. Verifying the validity of an ID-card or a driver’s license is a good option here.

Know your customer (KYC)

For long-term contracts or for legal proof, for instance, when signing up with a utility company or opening a bank account, you need to provide extra proof to verify your identity. As an add-on to document verification, TrustBuilder also offers the possibility to check whether people are on a sanctions list (anti-money laundering, politically exposed persons…) and deny access when necessary.

Document fraud

In some identification systems, you need to provide a utility or telecom bill. These documents can easily be copied or forged. Using document verification allows you to ascertain a person’s identity 100%.

Physical access control

The selfie captured at onboarding can also be used to grant or deny physical access. In a sports stadium, for instance, combining facial recognition with that selfie can identify and block people with stadium bans or allow entry to season ticket holders without an extra ticket check.

Document validation in bank branches

Recognizing if documents are real or forged is not always easy for a bank clerk. You can use our document verification system to check the authenticity of a document. Digital technology, using Artificial Intelligence, is better in assessing if a document is forged than the human eye.

How to implement document verification

TrustBuilder’s document validation solution can be implemented in different ways, offering full circle identification through mobile, web and even voice recognition.

Mobile

The most common case for document verification is when a person onboards for an app or a service using a mobile device. The mobile device is then used both to make pictures of the official document and to make the selfie that acts as extra proof of identity.

Web

Document verification can also be used when onboarding or accessing services using a web browser. In this case, either the webcam is used to verify documents and record a video selfie, or a QR code is provided to complete the identification using a mobile device.

Voice

TrustBuilder’s document verification solution also supports voice recognition: a spoken word segment can be recorded and used for authentication purposes, for instance to confirm large bank transfers. In a call center context, the voice solution can also be used to quickly identify a customer and provide faster customer service.
